The Mpumalanga education department is expecting a full briefing regarding an allegation of a principal and teacher accused of having sex with underage pupils.

Progress made in the high-profile investigation will be disclosed by the department's labour relations and misconduct sections.

Hlahla Ngwenya, the provincial education spokesman, said he was unaware of the status of the investigation.

The principal and teacher of a high school at Ludlow village near Manyeleti game reserve received their letters of suspension on Monday last week.

"I'm still expecting a full briefing on a number of aspects, including the investigation's progress, its duration and the current situation at the school," said Ngwenya.

He said he hoped the two would be charged before the end of this week.

The teacher and principal are alleged to have kept a mattress in the principal's office which they allegedly used for sex with pupils, some as young as 15 years.

One girl is now seven-months pregnant and has accused the teacher of impregnating her. Her father has opened a case of statutory rape against the teacher.

The teacher was arrested two weeks ago and released on R1000 bail and warned not to interfere with witnesses. He will appear before the same court again on June 19.

The teacher allegedly told a delegation sent by the girl's family that he could not have made her pregnant because they had used condoms every time they had sex.

He has since claimed that he first heard of the girl's claims when Sowetan questioned him about them more than two weeks ago.

Approached for comment, the principal said: "I swear I'm not involved and I know that the department's investigators will clear my name."
