The first shipment of Chinese vehicles that dealership group McCarthy plans to sell locally more cheaply than South African-manufactured cars left Tianjin City yesterday.

McCarthy chief executive Brand Pretorius attended a celebration in China to mark the event.

"It was a very important occasion for all of us from McCarthy. More than three years of planning, research, development and testing culminated in this one moment.

"The level of commitment and participation from high-level Chinese officials certainly reinforced our confidence in our vehicle import and distribution programme," Pretorius said.

McCarthy plans to launch its range of fully-imported Chinese vehicles in July.

"This new range will compete for leadership in the value segments of the market, boasting very competitive selling prices and low cost of ownership," said Jolyon Nash, executive director in charge of the vehicle import and distribution division of McCarthy.

Pretorious recently said that the government is reviewing its Motor Development Industry Programme. This import protection programme has helped to grow the automotive industry into the second-biggest employer in the industrial sector, providing almost 310000 jobs.
