This was very evident when the diminutive Harmony athlete shook Kenyans Isaac Kiplimo and Shadrack Ruto to take third in the Konica Minolta Jackie Meckler 25km in Pretoria on Saturday.
The Kenyans thought they would have things their own way during the race but told Harmony club coach Dewald Steyn things had not gone quite as planned.
"We had trouble with this little guy all the way. He pushed the hell out of us, who is he?" they asked.
The Kenyans were lucky to have taken the first two places - only being split by one second - with Thugwane a further minute back with a time of 80min:7sec.
Harmony dominated the winners' rostrum. The women's race was also a clean sweep for the black and red outfit with Zimbabwean Olivia Chitate (93:10) taking first followed by Namibian Beata Naigambo (94:12) and Ndofhiwa Mandiwana, who clocked 99:00 for the bronze.
Sipho Maisela won the 50km race in 2:55:44 ahead of Lucas Monyane (2:59:21) and Petrus Mahlangu (2:59:30). The women's spoils went to Riana van Niekerk (3:38:00) followed by Diepsloot's Elizabeth Phaka (3:56:46) and Prudence Zwane (4:00:55).
The 10km was also an all-Harmony affair with Alfred Kerina (29:17) and Helaria Johannes (33:16) winning gold. - Sapa
