Kabelo Thipe, a Pretoria call centre consultant, has accused the mayor of the Greater Groblersdal in Limpopo, Lionel Seloane ,of refusing to pay maintenance for their five-year-old son.

Seloane, told Sowetan he would not comment about the "private matter".

Thipe said the child, Kabelo, was the couple's love child, born out of a seven-year relationship.

She said the boy suffers from chronic asthma.

"The child was planned," said Thipe, who also called Seloane an "immature father".

The irate 36-year-old mother has taken Seloane to court and she is demanding R5000 monthly expenses such as medication, food, transport and school fees.

"He must act like a man. Men look after their children, but boys run away from their responsibilities," she said.

Thipe said it was through the "grace of God" and her parents' assistance that she had managed to raise their son.

Seloane allegedly failed to appear in the Pretoria magistrates' court this week after he was served with a summons.

She said Seloane had played an active role in their child's life until the couple's split two years ago. She claimed his "infidelity" was the reason she parted with him.

"Maybe he is bitter. He never imagined I would pack my bags and leave him. He thought I was foolish and too comfortable," she said.

Thipe said she was "appalled" that Seloane would "neglect his own flesh and blood, and instead boast about looking after his late brother's children".

Seloane said: "With due respect, this is a private matter and she knows that it is being handled."

The mayor declined to elaborate.
