Edward Kekana said yesterday that he felt sorry for the families of the three men he had shot dead for "losing their loved ones".
"I feel bad that they had to go through this trauma, but they must have known what these people were capable of," he said.
Kekana, a technical inspector at Wits University, said he was looking forward to continuing his life "without this cloud hanging over my head".
An ecstatic Kekana said he was confident "all along" that he was going to be acquitted.
He said: "I was just defending myself and my family. I will now focus on my career.
"My employers have been very understanding, but I have not been able to pursue career opportunities because of this cloud hanging over my head.
