City Power helps poor kids

Staff of Johannesburg utility City Power exchanged their executive attire for overalls to improve the lives of 102 children.

City Power staff were hard at work this week refurbishing Mayibuye Pre-School near Ivory Park in Midrand, Gauteng.

With each nail hammered in the ceiling, the tiny tots passionately recited nursery rhymes, creating a warm working atmosphere.

The pre-school's main building, which was unfit for the young children to spend time in, was painted, the ceiling was repaired and two toilets were unblocked and fitted with new pipes.

The building, which had electricity wires dangling all over the place, was rewired.

City Power spokesman Sol Masolo said: "We looked at the entire township and found this pre-school in a desperate condition. With winter coming, we could not ignore the plight of the children."

Principal Cynthia Mazwai said the conditions were not favourable for children's development.

"There was nothing we could do. The pre-school is a reflection of our township. We are happy that City Power has helped, but we will appreciate more help from other companies," Mazwai said.
