A Mpumalanga sangoma is on the run after he and his friend allegedly raped an 18-year-old girl, police said yesterday.
The 39-year-old sangoma and his 27-year-old friend, both of Lefiso village near Marapyane in KwaMhlanga, raped the girl on Saturday, police spokesman Veli Semenya said.
Semenya said the victim was still in hospital and her condition was stable.
He said the two men went to the girl's home at about 12pm on Saturday and found her with her friends.
He said they reportedly asked the girl's friends to excuse them because they wanted to talk to herabout a serious matter in private.
"After her friends were gone, the two allegedly pulled off the victim's panties before taking turns to rape her," saidSemenya.
Semenya said the sangoma's friend had since been arrested and charged with rape.
He will appear in the Marapyane periodic court today.
The sangoma is still in hiding, but Semenya said the police were closing in on him.
The incident has prompted the residents of Lefiso to hold a meeting with the local headman, Sam Mmutle to discuss the safety of women and children in the area.
Mmutle yesterday said that the community was disturbed by the incident.
Conrad Tjiane, chairman of the African National Healers Association in Moutse, also condemned the incident.
