The University of South Africa yesterday awarded Pravin Gordhan, commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (Sars), an honorary Doctor of Commerce degree.

Gordhan, a former member of parliament who holds a postgraduate qualification in human development, received the degree for his contribution to the economy.

"Under his guidance and leadership as commissioner, Sars has demonstrated significant improvements in performance which included a marked increase and growth in revenue collection and increase in tax and customs compliance," the university said yesterday. - Sapa
