The much-awaited continental radio awards, the BBC Africa Radio Awards, have been confirmed for May 26 in Kenya.

And all indications so far are that they are bound to be a glittering event because one of the most talented and skilled live-events producers in southern Africa, Jan Malan, has been roped in as the producer.

The finals will be held at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi.

The BBC Africa Radio Awards follow the regional finals held in South Africa in February.

The awards celebrate the excellence of radio journalism across Africa.

Hosted by BBC producer and presenter, Komla Dumor, the evening will feature live performances from Nigerian Rapper 2Face Idibia, South African vocalist Thandiswa Mazwai, pictured, and Kenyan newcomer Valerie Kimani.

Trophies presented will recognise the best Radio Station of the Year, New Radio Station of the Year, News Journalist of the Year, Sports Journalist of the Year, Local On-Air Campaign of the Year, Interactive-Talk Show of the Year and Young Broadcaster of the Year.

"I am particularly excited because promoting African talent is my passion - anything that brings African dreams and skills to an international stage," Malan said.

"I plan to bring the energy and synergy from the events I am known for staging to make this a memorable occasion.

"I have arranged for leading African designers, Sun Goddess, who are the husband and wife team Thando and Vanya Mangaliso, to create unique designs specifically for this occasion.

"Their designs will be worn by selected individuals on and off the stage," Malan said.

Vera Kwakofi, project manager of the BBC Africa Radio Awards, said: "Jan embodies the very essence of what this competition is about - celebrating the best of African talent.

"He has dedicated his career to bringing the best that Africa has to offer to an international audience which is why I am delighted he is playing a central role."

Malan has been instrumental in the nurturing of African talent throughout the years.

In the late 1990s he conceptualised and spearheaded the Face of Africa Model Search, the first ever international search for an African super-model.

The competition winner, Oluchi, went on to become the first black model to grace the covers of Italian Vogue.
