Soweto string ensemble dazzles Paris

To celebrate their 10th anniversary, the Soweto-based Buskaid String Ensemble went on a triumphant tour to France.

To celebrate their 10th anniversary, the Soweto-based Buskaid String Ensemble went on a triumphant tour to France.

The ensemble was well-received - they played to packed houses and standing ovations there.

On their return they continued to celebrate their anniversary with a gala performance at the Theatre on the Square in Sandton, Johannesburg.

This performance marked the fifth anniversary of the partnership between Buskaid and Leaders Unlimited Korn/Ferry International, which this year donated R160000 to the group.

The orchestra has been invited to play at the promenade concert in the Royal Albert Hall in London later in the year.

They will be the first group from Africa to perform at the event and the first all-black orchestra ever to perform at this venue.

The ensemble was established by Rosemary Nalden in 1997 when she first came to work in South Africa in response to requests from the local Diepkloof community.

They have released four CDs including the double album Buskaid Live! - Tebogo Monama
