Career guidance and counselling are like the road signs and markings of life.
A journey from one point of a country to the other would be a hazard-filled ordeal without these crucial signs and markings.
Travellers would not know how far they have gone, which speed limit to obey and would be oblivious to the dangers that lie ahead.
A majority of South Africa's 30000 schools give scant regard, or no regard at all, to career guidance and counselling.
As a result, many youths struggle to navigate their way after finishing matric or whenever they need to make crucial career-related plans and decisions.
Stepping into this breach is the annual SABC Education Careers Fair, which introduces pupils in grades nine to 11 to a myriad of career choices and life-skills information.
The career fairs' regional stop-overs are due to take place at Mthatha City Hall in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, over four days from Tuesday May 8, and at:
l Rustenburg, North West on May 17 and 18;
l Bloemfontein, Free State on May 23 to 25th;
l Pretoria, Gauteng on May 29 to 31;
l Cape Town, Western Cape from July 24 to 27
l Kimberley, Northern Cape on August 2 and 3;
l Polokwane, Limpopo from August 13 to 17.
At these fairs pupils will be given information from youth organisations, universities, colleges, government departments, skills development centres and bursaries from companies and financial institutions.
Workshops will also be provided at these fairs for teachers.
Teachers who set aside time to induct pupils on valuable life skills exercises including career guidance and counselling, are rare treasures of the public education system.

l The SABC is a partner of Sowetan and the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation, together with Old Mutual on the Community Builder of the Year Awards, to be held in Johannesburg in December.
l SABC also partners with Sowetan, the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation and the Transnet Foundation in the Massed Choir Festival, set for Johannesburg in September.
