The IFP in Durban's eThekwini region says it welcomes the imminent visit by cabinet ministers to intervene in the ongoing tension over the proposed name changes to about 200 streets and buildings in the city.
On Thursday, government spokesman Themba Maseko announced that Arts and Culture Minister Pallo Jordan and Provincial and Local Government Minister Sydney Mufamadi would hold talks with key role-players including mayors, the provincial government and all parties opposed to the name changes.
Maseko said yesterday that no date had been set for the meeting, but that it would take place as soon as possible.
Thembi Nzuza, the IFP's caucus leader in the eThekwini municipality, said the deployment of the ministers was a "positive step".
"We welcome the visit and feel that someone from outside is likely to have an unbiased mind on this matter," she said.
Nzuza said the IFP requested that the name-change process start afresh.
"The first phase of the process was done without our input or the public's input," she said.
The DA and the Minority Front have also expressed concern about the process involved.
