Man of ideas, son of the soil

Andile Mngxitama

Bubele Mahanjana, a young scholar and economics lecturer at Wits University, was a rare type of person in a world which values crass materialism over ideas.

He so loved ideas that he sacrificed a career in an internationally renowned accounting firm for the lonely, modest life of a university student.

His untimely death cut short his studies towards a master's degree in economics.

Bubele was a brilliant thinker, a persuasive conversationalist and a humorous individual. A debate with Bubele always lingered on long after the encounter. He forced people to think.

He carried with him the capacity to make people laugh hard, at themselves and at the follies of life.

South Africa has lost a young, promising intellectual who had his heart and head firmly rooted in the people.

Let the debate rage on beyond the grave as you engage the Bikos, Cabrals and Makanas.

He will be buried at Tsholomnqa in East London on Saturday.
