Seventy-three percent of 2000 metropolitan adults polled by TNS Research Surveys agreed with the statement that: "It is important to have independent [media] so that we can get unbiased news."
A total of 15percent disagreed and 12 percent didn't know.
Those with higher education and wealth levels were more likely to agree, about 85 percent, than poorer and less-educated people, about 60 percent.
Agreement in Gauteng was strongest in Johannesburg and Pretoria, with 87percent and 86percent respectively. In Soweto, 77percent agreed. - Sapa
