After spending the better half of the day at Mulbarton Hospital instead of facing a magistrate yesterday, football star Gift Leremi was reportedly seen lugging a tray of beer at a liquor store.
Leremi failed to appear in the Randburg magistrates' court on assault charges, where a warrant of arrest was issued, but withheld. He is said to have been nursing an injured ear at the hospital.
He is alleged to have assaulted Ephraim Memeza at a petrol filling station in Sandton in December.
His lawyer, David Moerane, told the court the Orlando Pirates midfielder had been admitted to Mulbarton Hospital and did not know when he would be discharged.
He said he had no doubt that Leremi would provide proof that he was indeed in hospital.
Meanwhile, Sowetanhas reliably learnt that he was not admitted to the hospital but only went there in the morning to have "his badly injured" ear examined and was later released. It is not known what caused the injury.
He was reportedly later seen at a bottle store at Ridgeway Mall. Two attendants confirmed that Leremi was at the bottle store buying alcohol.
"He came in just as we were about to close and bought a case of beer," they said.
The store closes at 6.30pm.
This statement contradicted Leremi's lawyer, David Moerane, who told Sowetan that Leremi was not at the bottle store.
"I was with him at my office until after 6pm, so I don't know where those people get that," he said.
Moerane said that Leremi went by his office to drop a letter from the doctor.
Leremi has to provide proof to the Randburg court that he was in hospital.
Mickey Modisane of Orlando Pirates said the club would support Leremi.
