Sanity has prevailed. Boxing South Africa is relocating back to Nasrec.
Loyiso Mtya confirmed to Sowetan yesterday that the governing body would vacate their plush offices in Midrand on June 1.
He said it had been grossly expensive to maintain their offices and concurred that occupying them was a grave mistake.
"They are far away from our licensees," said Mtya, who revealed that their monthly rent was R37 000.
"Nasrec is central to anybody, and secondly going back there means that we will also save R31 000 from the rental because we will be paying R6 000 a month."
Licensees, who do not have cars, had to board taxis to Pretoria to reach BSA. But getting off on the freeway at Samrand depended on the moods of taxi drivers.
BSA has been in Midrand since April 2002. The Gauteng Provincial Boxing Control Commissio, which did all the spadework then, was housed at Nasrec until Ngconde Balfour, then minister of sports, abolished all provincial commissions in May 2003.
Balfour introduced the interim structure, which was later replaced by the BSA, under the stewardship of Mthobi "Choirmaster" Tyamzashe.
The amount of money that BSA will have spent from April 2002 until June 1 2007 is about R3 million. Boxing has been administered at Nasrec since 1992 under Stan Christodoulou.
