A warrant of arrest has been issued for wayward Orlando Pirates' midfielder Gift Leremi.
Leremi, pictured, failed to appear in the Randburg magistrates' court yesterday.
He is alleged to have assaulted Ephraim Memeza at a petrol filling station in Sandton, Johannesburg in December.
His lawyer, David Moerane, told the court the player had been admitted to the Mulbarton Hospital and did not know when he would be discharged.
He said he had no doubt Leremi would produce proof that he was indeed in hospital.
Magistrate AP Senne went ahead and issued the warrant, but ordered that it be held over until the player's appearance on May 16. He said should Leremi not appear on that date, the warrant would be executed for his immediate arrest.
Memeza and another witness were in court as Moerane had requested during previous proceedings. Memeza said he was disappointed Leremi did not arrive for the case.
Leremi's parents were also present during the proceedings.
Yesterday's appearance would have been Leremi's third after his case was postponed a month ago.
The elusive Leremi has once before ignored a summons to appear in court.
