Police say they expect to make many more arrests in the wake of Tuesday's chaotic Inkatha Freedom Party protest march in central Durban.

The march was staged in protest at the changes to the names of the city's streets and landmarks decreed by the eThekwini ANC. The changing of the names of the Mangosuthu Highway, the Mangosuthu Technikon and the Princess Magogo Stadium, at KwaMashu, north of Durban, drew the strongest fire from the marchers.

The ANC called for the public to propose names for the city's streets and buildings.

The council wants the Mangosuthu Highway and the Mangosuthu Technikon to be named after Griffiths Mxenge, an ANC freedom fighter. Princess Magogo Stadium would become Dumisani Makhaye Stadium.

On Tuesday, thousands of IFP party faithful from throughout the province descended on the city.

Some protesters looted shops and assaulted people who were not marching. Several gunshots were heard. The police arrested two people for malicious damage to property and theft.

Police spokesman Phindile Hadebe said yesterday that more arrests would be made soon.

"We have our own way of identifying those who broke the law during the march," she said.

Thembi Nzuza, the IFP's caucus leader in the eThwekwini council and an organiser of the protest, disowned those arrested.
