KwaZulu-Natal MEC for transport Bheki Cele has hit out at drunk drivers, warning that they will be arrested on the spot.

In the past five days, 118 motorists in the province were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Eleven people died on the roads over the long weekend and four of the accidents involved minibus taxis. In Pietermaritzburg alone 63 motorists were arrested for drinking and driving.

Cele said drinking and driving had become a serious pandemic in the province.

"This hinders the department of transport from achieving the 100percent compliance against drinking and driving. The problem of drunk driving has become a serious pandemic in Durban and Pietermaritzburg. For us to realise full compliance, road safety education and enforcement would be intensified," said Cele.

In his budget speech last week Cele said the province was faced with a shortage of traffic officers and the existence of corrupt officers.

He said to address the shortage of traffic officers, a total of R60million had been set aside by the department to employ 300 officers over the next three years and 100 public transport enforcement unit officers over the next two years.

Spokesman Nonkululeko Mbatha said the high number of motorists arrested for drunk driving showed traffic officers were taking their jobs more seriously.
