A former senior prosecutor for the National Prosecutions Authority, Cornwell Chavungwa, got R350000 of the R3,6million deposited into the account of Mpumalanga communications company Rainbow Kwanda, the Nelspruit regional court heard yesterday.
The former chief executive of the company, Kedibone Mashamaite, who is a state witness, testified against the former chief executive of the disbanded Mpumalanga Economic Empowerment Corporation, Ernest Khoza, and the former director-general of the premier's office, Stanley Soko.
Khoza and Soko are charged with fraud, corruption and contravening the Public Finance Management Act.
The court heard that, in October 2003, R350000 was paid to Chavungwa for stopping a fraud investigation of Khoza.
The court was told that Khoza had told Mashamaite that Chavungwa was willing to stop the investigation if he were paid.
But later Chavungwa allegedly said he wanted R3 million.
Mashamaite said he told Chavungwa that such a payment would be unethical and refused to pay.
The case was postponed to June 13, and bail of R50000 for Soko and of R20000 for Khoza was extended.
