Former Metro presenter Given Mk-hari's MSG Afrika consortium has been awarded a licence to start a new radio station in the Limpopo Province. The new station will be called Capricorn FM.
Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) also announ-ced the winners of the licences for the North West Province and Mpumalanga after a two-year wait. A consortium led by local Mpumalanga businesses was awarded the licence to establish M-Power Radio and a consortium led by the Direng Group will develop the North West station that is still using the working name of North West Radio.
"It has been a long time since a commercial licence was awarded," said Icasa spokesman Sekgoela Sekgeola. "I think the last one was Kaya FM. The reason we targeted these provinces was to stimulate economic development in these provinces. We invited applications in the Northern Cape, but none ap-plied for it."
Mkhari expects to begin broadcasting within three to four months, airing 70percent music-based content aimed at the Limpopo mass market.
He commented that the music will be made up of "a brilliant blend" of classical and contemporary music.
M-Power is likely to begin broadcasting towards the end of the year.
