Almost 35000 work permits for foreigners with scarce and critically needed skills were made available by home affairs minster Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula yesterday.

The work permits will allow foreign nationals with the required qualifications and work experience to enter South Africa without first having to secure employment.

Fifty-three occupations, including call-centre managers, clinical and biomedical engineers, technologists, and precision metals- trade workers, were on the list of wanted skills.

Foreigners given a work permit will be required to find a job in their field of expertise within 90 days. - Sapa
