Inspired by ordinary people making contributions

Every morning when I get to work, I am met by the sight of construction workers going about their business of making sure that brick by brick, pillar by pillar, the showpiece venue of the Fifa 2010 World Cup is constructed in time for the main event.

Every morning when I get to work, I am met by the sight of construction workers going about their business of making sure that brick by brick, pillar by pillar, the showpiece venue of the Fifa 2010 World Cup is constructed in time for the main event.

I learn that they are actually ahead of their construction schedule. I am inspired by this. Unknown ordinary people are making their humble contribution to make sure the tournament is delivered to exceptional standards.

The provision of this venue, like that of many others, is the responsibility of the host city. In this instance the city of Johannesburg.

Just like the provision of infrastructure and facilities are the responsibility of the different spheres of government, it is still the responsibility of the officials of the cities to profile and market their respective communities.

The World Cup 2010 South African Local Organising Committee views the host cities' partners as the most critical delivery agents in the preparations for the World Cup.

They will be providing services in many areas too numerous to mention, including disaster management and security.

The public viewing areas, popularly known as fan parks, are going to be run by host cities, in partnership with the LOC and Fifa. But ahead of 2010 they have to organise marketing programmes to popularise their involvement in the event, create benefits for their communities as well as advise local businesses about the opportunities that can be created by the hosting of this major event.

The sponsors are also keen to take part in programmes initiated by the host cities. This relationship offers the country, the LOC and the host cities a synergistic opportunity to market South Africa as a compelling destination.

Over the next few years we will be showcasing the best the country has to offer. It is why one of the key approaches of the LOC is to form focused stakeholder partnerships as well as to encourage public participation wherever possible.

The LOC's mission is to organise an African Fifa World Cup with precision, innovation and flair; to extend an unforgettable South African welcome to the world; and to collaborate with all stakeholders in a dynamic partnership based on integrity and excellence.

With your support and partnerships with the various stakeholders, South Africa will give the world one of the greatest experiences ever! Let me invite you to forward me your views, be it concerns or contributions of any nature, they are welcome.
