An argument between two West Rand schoolgirls ended in a 17-year-old being stabbed with a pair of scissors last week.

The incident took place at the Townsview High School in Krugersdorp after a 16-year-old accused the 17-year-old of having an abortion.

During the argument the younger girl produced a pair of scissors and stabbed the 17-year-old.

The 16-year-old is the mother of a two-month-old baby.

Police confirmed that the 16-year-old appeared in court yesterday.

She was released into her parents' custody.

The school principal, only known as Mr Du Preez, said the matter had been referred to the Gauteng department of education.

This attack is the latest in violence at educational institutions. Last week an 18-year-old was shot while in a toilet at a school in KwaZulu-Natal. In the same week 32 people were shot dead by a student at Virginia Tech in the US. The student committed suicide after the shooting.
