Netball South Africa development and events manager Portia Dimu has encouraged the sport's lovers to support the game by attending national netball league matches.

This season's opening matches were played on Friday, and Dimu has appealed to supporters to encourage players, especially because this year is a World Cup year.

"The national league often determines how a national team will play. Look at the top rated countries in the world: they have acknowledged that support from fans is a big factor of success in every sport. Appreciation encourages the players, recognition for their hard work raises their profiles," Dimu said.

She promised that competition in the league will be sky high this year, with players trying hard to get picked for the final team that will compete at the World Cup in New Zealand.

"Players need to know that the door will not be closed until September. For instance, Claudia Basson, Bronwyn Bock Jonathan and Zanele Mdodana have all recently been drafted into the squad from the league," she said.

Results: Tornadoes 51, Unicorns 32; Comets 20, Cheetahs 36; Mermaids 54, Mpumalanga Ingwes 26. The result of the match between Limpopo Crocodiles and Flamingoes was not available.
