Scorpions senior advocate Portia Kgantsi was arrested by her own unit in September after she had allegedly extorted R40000 from two awaiting-trial prisoners at Sandton police cells.

State advocate Herman Broodryk said Kgantsi was part of the team that had arrested the two awaiting-trial prisoners on charges of fraud.

The state alleges Kgantsi approached the prisoners, who were suspected of being illegal immigrants, after their arrest on August 26 and told them that she could arrange to have their passports validated if they paid her R9000 in cash.

A week later she allegedly demanded the prisoners pay her R3000 for her travelling expenses and this was followed by a demand for a further R6000.

On September 21 the state alleges Kgantsi demanded the prisoners deposit R30000 into her husband's bank account to prevent the Asset Forfeiture Unit from attaching their assets.

Kgantsi then allegedly demanded still more money - R10 000 - to arrange to take over the case from the allocated prosecutor and have it struck off the roll.

It is believed she threatened the awaiting-trial prisoners with a 15-year prison sentence if they failed to pay her the money.

She is also alleged to have lied about her previous conviction during her bail application .
