The Metropolitan Cup Under-19 soccer tournament held in Port Elizabeth last week drew to a close on Saturday, with local team Showvillage United Brothers being crowned champions and walking away with R10 000 in prize money.
Brothers needed a bit of luck to wrest the cup from Ala Vegas of Mpumalanga, despite being backed by more than over 1 000 Zwide residents.
They eventually won the championship 4-2 on penalties, after 120 minutes of play. What was impressive about both finalists was the character they showed, starting the tournament slowly but stepping up their game when it mattered.
Brothers had overtaken Santos at the top of their table, scoring, in their final group match, the three goals required for them to qualify for the finals.
Vegas also left it late, booking their final spot by toppling their Limpopo counterparts, Tebo Stars from the first position in their final match.
In the losers final, Tebo Stars defeated Sibaya Bootlaces Football Academy of KwaZulu-Natal 2-0.
However, the standard of play of some teams left a lot to be desired. This was illustrated by Gauteng representatives Kudung Middle School going down 9-0 to Vegas at the Motherwell Stadium.
The Dream Team, chosen by tourmament ambassadors Wellington Manyathi, Edward Motale, Pollen Ndlanya and Sipho Ndzuzo, will, according to tournament director Christabell Kota, be afforded opportunities they would ordinarily not have access to.
