The media is a very powerful institution. It has the power to inform, educate and entertain. It also has the power to aid an ideology or behaviour in society.
I guess the main objective of the media is to ensure that people behave in a responsible manner, so it is in effect a watchdog.
The South African media condemns crime, rape, murder and all other abhorrent behaviour. But to my dismay, it seems that the more the media condemns such behaviour, the more such heinous behaviour is perpetrated.
The question is: Is the media playing its social responsibility role effectively or is it seen as fictitious in the sense that people cannot believe what they read, hear and see?
If that is the case, our society is morally bankrupt and spiritually corrupt.
We should have sympathy with people who are raped and killed. But people keep committing these crimes, despite being condemned in the media.
The reality is, the media tries to play a responsible role in reducing crime by reporting it. The media is there to give us direction and to guide us. But the problem lies with the individuals who cannot control themselves.
