Two police detectives have appeared in court charged with defrauding a crime victim of R5000.
Detective Inspector Shembisa Maphanga and Detective Constable Sontanya Malatjie appeared in the Middelburg magistrates' court in Mpumalanga on Tuesday and paid bail of R3000 each, Captain Leonard Hlathi said yesterday.
They allegedly demanded that Peter Sitanya pay them R5000 on January 12 to release his stolen car from the police impound. The car had been used in a robbery.
"It is alleged that they took him to a bank machine where he withdrew R1000.
"They then allegedly took him to his mother's and grandmother's homes to borrow more money. He claimed that he handed the money to the two detectives," Hlathi said.
The two will appear in court again on May 30. - Sapa
