Annanias Mathe, the man reputed to be one of South Africa's most dangerous criminals, is said to be recovering after reports that he was gravely ill.
Talk Radio 702 reported that he might have only a few weeks to live and might not survive to attend his trial in June.
The station also said that the "Houdini of C-Max" had Aids and his health was deteriorating rapidly.
It said he was too weak to feed himself and was confined to a wheelchair.
Correctional services spokesman Manelisi Wolela said that Mathe was seriously ill, but denied that he might have only a few weeks to live.
"He is taking his medication and is recuperating well," Wolela said.
He said Mathe had fluid on the lungs.
For security reasons, Wolela would not divulge whether Mathe was in prison or in hospital.
The 29-year-old former Mozambican soldier is the only person to have escaped from the country's top-security prison, a feat he accomplished last year.
Mathe was recaptured by employees of vehicle tracking and recovery company Altech Netstar in Tembisa a few days later.
Wolela said Correctional Services was monitoring Mathe's condition closely.
Mathe faces 51 charges, including rape, hijacking and armed robbery, and escaping from custody.
