1873: Enoch Mankayi Sontonga is born.

1897: Sontonga composes Nkosi.

1905: On April 18 Sontonga dies, aged 32.

1912: Sontonga's hymn is first sung at a political rally after the closing prayer.

1923: On October 23 Solomon T Plaatje records a version of Nkosi.

1925: The ANC officially adopts Nkosi as its anthem.

1927: The Lovedale Press publishes the sheet music of Nkosi for the first time.

1929: Nkosi is published in a religious publication, the Presbyterian Xhosa hymnal, Ingcwade yama-culo Ase-Rabe.

1942: Moses Mphahlele composes the Sesotho version of Nkosi called Morena Boloka Setjhaba sa Heso.

1992: Nkosi! The Healing Song, written by Mothobi Mutloase, is performed at the Wits Great Hall.

1994: The National Monuments Council is informed about Sontonga's burial in the Braamfontein Cemetery.

1996: President Mandela declares Sontonga's grave - Plot Number 4885 - a national monument. Madiba bestows the Order of Meritorious Service in Gold posthumously.The award is received by Sontonga's granddaughter Ma Ida Rabotapi.
