Following the death of three inmates at Gauteng's Krugersdorp Prison, there's a sense that the outrage that greeted the killings might prompt the government to finally review conditions in the country's jails.
This is obviously not to prejudge the criminal investigation that has led to this week's court appearance of six warders in connection with the deaths of three inmates.
Early indications that overcrowding might have played a key role in sparking the incident are cause for serious concern. This is because the issue of overcrowding in prisons and the urgent need for solutions have been under discussion for a long time.
The crowding in jails must be eased before further havoc.
