Pretoria high court judge Essop Patel, who has been presiding over the trial of advocates Dirk Prinsloo and Cezanne Visser, also known as "Advocate Barbie", has died of cancer, the SABC reported yesterday.
He was scheduled to be buried by Muslim rites at Johannesburg's Newclare Cemetery yesterday.
His office said all his cases had been finalised except for the "Barbie trial", to which a new judge has yet to be appointed.
Visser faces a range of sex-related charges, including indecently assaulting women and children, soliciting a minor to commit indecent acts, the possession and manufacture of child pornography and defrauding a children's home.
Prinsloo is still on the run from police after failing to return from Russia.
It has been speculated that the case might have to start afresh when the new judge takes over. - Sapa
