A 30-year-old man charged with violating a dead body was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment or a fine of R3000 by the Mogwase magistrates' court yesterday.
Albert Kgwatisi, of Moruleng village near Mogwase, North West, was arrested in March after he dug up his mother's corpse and extracted two teeth from her skull.
He told police he believed his mother's spirit would come looking for the missing teeth.
He had dug up the body while in the company of a 12-year-old boy.
When he was arrested only one tooth was found in his possession and he was unable to explain what had happened to the other one.
The boy told police that the man often played games with the teeth and might have lost one of them. - Sapa
