Pressure is mounting among women's groups and opposition parties within the IFP-led uMzinyathi district municipality in Dundee, northern KwaZulu-Natal, to have municipal manager, Otto Kunene suspended.

This comes after a senior official opened a case of attempted rape against him last week.

It is alleged Kunene tried to force himself on the official in his office. She reported the matter to the police, where a case was opened.

Kunene expressed shock when contacted for a comment yesterday. "I know nothing about those allegations as neither the police nor anyone came to me regarding that. But I will be able to make a comment as soon as there's something in black and white," he said

Police spokesman Captain Shooz Magudulela, confirmed that a case had been opened against Kunene. "Yes, I can confirm that a case of attempted rape has been opened and we are investigating. This is a very serious matter and we will treat it as such," said Magudulela.

Magudulela said a 10-page statement was taken from the victim.

Police were still taking statements from witnesses.
