A Cape Town environmental group has launched another legal bid to prevent the demolition of the old Green Point stadium to make way for an arena to host 2010 Soccer World Cup matches.

The Cape Town Environmental Protection Association launched its interdict yesterday. The matter will be heard in the Cape high court today.

The city plans to build a R2,9billion stadium to replace the old one.

City of Cape Town World Cup spokesman Pieter Cronje confirmed yesterday that legal papers have been served on the city.

He said the city's lawyers are studying the documentation and it planned to defend the matter.

The group launched a legal bid on Friday in the Cape high court, but the matter was not heard because papers were filed late. This latest application is a new one. Arthur Weinberg, chairman of the group, would not comment on the issue yesterday.
