East London police on Friday arrested two men in connection with the gruesome murder of a mentally deranged man from Duncan Village.
Police spokesman Mtati Tana yesterday said the victim Nqaba Nanasane, 38, was shot and killed at Greenpoint Road in Buffalo Flats. Tana said the men allegedly shot the victim and jumped in a red Ford Bantam and fled the scene.
"The police followed clues and arrested the suspects in Duncan Village within an hour," he said.
Superintendent Tana said a pistol allegedly used by the suspects, aged 23 and 38, was also recovered. The suspects are detained at Buffalo Flats police station and will appear in the East London magistrates' court on a charge of murder. People at the scene described the victim as an innocent guy who always roamed about the shopping complex, next to a local shop and was not a threat to anyone.
"The motive of the killing is still unknown at this stage, the police are investigating the case," said Tana.
In another incident, East London police are investigating a case of armed robbery after a 36-year-old shop manager was robbed at gunpoint on Saturday in Quigney.
Tana said three men allegedly entered the shop pretending to be customers. They allegedly pointed their guns at the manager, demanded money and searched him. Tana said the men took an undisclosed amount of cash.
"During the robbery a 34-year-old shop assistant was hit on the head with a butt of a gun and was taken to hospital for treatment."
The suspects are still at large and police have urged people with information pertaining to the incident to come forward as two of the suspects are known in the Quigney area.
