Involved teacher played pivotal role in many different areas

Sylvia Mokoto was born on September 4 1951 at Pimville, Soweto, to Joseph and Ruth Mokoto. She died on April 3.

Mokoto obtained a primary teacher's certificate at Strijdom Teachers Training College and later a secondary teacher's certificate at Vista University.

She completed her studies with a diploma in education from the College of Education of South Africa.

She taught at Ikaneng, Montshiwa and Protea South primary schools.

She then went to the Batallion 21 Adult Centre where she was an active member of the Schools Netball Association and the South African Democratic Teachers' Union.

Mokoto was an active member of a community development forum, where she was a teacher in basic greening and food training and counselling.

She was a member of the AME church and the Women's Fellowship and served on the entertainment, building and finance committees of the church.

She is survived by her daughter Poppy.
