A report by the forensic investigation unit has implicated Mpumalanga's head of the department of economic, development and planning in gross mismanagement.

The report accuses Simangele Sekgobela of irregularly awarding a tender without following tender procedures.

Sekgobela is accused of appointing Evening Flame Trading to conduct a feasibility study on production of bio-diesel from Soya bean without inviting competitive bids.

The tender exceeded R200000.

The report also accused her of two "fruitless and wasteful expenditure" charges.

Sekgobela is said to have paid an advance of R106000 to Bion Production, which failed to deliver, and placing a R14000 advert for a post that was already occupied.

"The public was misled into believing that the post was vacant and the department incurred R14000 in wasteful expenditure as a result of advertising the post," the forensic investigation unit reported.

Smangaliso Shongwe, a spokesman for the Mpumalanga department of economic, development and planning, said an investigation had been completed.

"The due processes are now being followed to bring this matter to finality," Shongwe said.
