Remember the late 1990s, when the Mitsubishi Pajero became a fashion statement in the townships?
But, as with other fashion trends, this changed when people started wanting German brands.
So, Mitsubishi Motors has done its homework to try to regain its former popularity with the South African public.
DaimlerChrysler South Africa recently introduced the new Pajero.
It looks masculine, bulky and more attractive than its predecessor.
Newly introduced in the Pajero lineup is the 3,2litre four-cylinder diesel engine.
It comes with common-rail direct fuel injection and delivers 121kW of power at 3500rpm, and 373Nm of torque at 2000rpm.
There is also the 3,8litre V6 Mitsubishi innovative valve timing electronic control (MIVEC) petrol engine, which puts out 184kW of power at 6000rpm and 329Nm of torque at 2750rpm.
This Pajero is fitted with a four-wheel-drive (4WD) system with the Super Select 4WD-II transfer case.
Active stability traction control and the rear differential lock are available only on the GLX long wheel base version.
These systems were developed on the bedrock of Mitsubishi Motors' all- wheel-control concept and deliver significant improvements in both off-road and on-highway performance.
With its sharp, new body and refined interior, the new Pajero is sure to win a few hearts.
It is available in short wheel base and long wheel base versions.
The automatic INVECS-II sport mode has five-speed automatic transmission.
The third row of seats in the Pajero folds neatly away into the floor
Audio and cruise controls can be adjusted on the steering wheel.
The long wheel base models enjoy an exclusive, 860W Rockford Fosgate sound system with 12 speakers.
The new Pajero is fitted with side-impact and curtain airbags, as well as dual front airbags for driver and passenger.
The Pajero comes with engine brake assist control and active stability and traction control.
Prices vary from R379100 to R487 800.
