The father of a baby girl born with no arms has come forward to help in supporting the child, and has put money aside for her future.
Lucky Sibiya, 27, from Mamelodi in Pretoria said he has not abandoned his daughter and has been depositing money into the account of his girlfriend Vuthlari Mahlale for the baby.
Two-month-old Shiluva touched Sowetan readers' hearts two weeks ago when her story was published.
At the time, Mahlale, 22, accused her boyfriend of walking out on her after the baby was born.
Sibiya said: "I could not get off work for the past two months and she knows that .
"I love my daughter very much and I cannot wait to hold her in my arms."
Sibiya said he did not understand what made Mahlale go to the press because he thought everything was fine between them. He said he has been waiting for Mahlale to come back from a funeral she went to attend at the end of February.
He said he had taken time off work to fix things up as all the bad publicity had "ruined" his life.
"The truth is I have been supporting my baby. My mother never said that I would get sick and die if I went to see the baby. I really do not know where all that came from," he said.
Sibiya showed proof of a policy for R100 a month from which Shiluva would receive R22400 after 10 years.
"I just want everybody to know that I love my baby very much and I will do everything in my power to ensure she has everything she deserves," Sibiya said.
Mahlale said yesterday that she left Sibiya's home in January after the baby's birth because Sibiya's mother had been treating her badly.
Mahlale confirmed that Sibiya gives her money.
"I am still upset that Lucky has not come to see the baby and that has hurt me very much," she said.
