The first 20 young people are off to an entrepreneurial head start thanks to the Hot Dog Cafe, in partnership with the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) and Builders Warehouse, which launched a new franchising scheme.

The franchise cadet programme comprehensively trains previously disadvantaged matriculated youths how to operate a small business. Cadets undergo a practical six-month training programme at the end of which they get the chance to purchase a Hot Dog Cafe cart funded 100percent by the Massmart Umsobomvu Youth Fund. Each cart will be stationed at a Builders Warehouse, rent free. Seda has invested R700000 in the programme.

"We have chosen people who want to make a success of their lives and are giving them the chance to become their own bosses," said Derek Smith, managing director of Hot Dog Cafe.

Though it is a pilot scheme, the Hot Dog Cafe has already produced three entrepreneurs who are now running successful businesses and even employ their own staff.
