"I do not know where my children should go to earn a living for themselves. They cannot go to the moon to find jobs but have to do so like anyone else here on earth. And this is their constitutional right."
This was said by Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi when he delivered a speech during the Zululand district municipality budget presentation last week.
Buthelezi commented for the first time on media reports that his daughter, Sibuyiselwe Buthelezi, was employed as the Ulundi municipal manager last month because she was his daughter and that he had intervened personally to have her appointed.
"I have served this country and my people well for more than 50 years and I am deeply hurt by the fact that there are some councillors who have tried to drag my name into the mud by colluding with some of the well-known enemies of the party in the media to vilify me," Buthelezi said.
He said he had never made any personal intervention over his daughter's appointment.
"When my daughter applied for the post, she never even told me nor her mother, and yet there are some councillors in the municipality who colluded with some journalists that are hostile to me and my party to imply that she was employed because she was my daughter," he said.
"I am deeply hurt that people who would be nothing today if my party did not elevate them to positions of eminence should try to besmirch my name in the twilight of my life. I have sacrificed so much in serving this country and the people," he said.
He said he had never thought his children would be subjected to threats for being his children.
