Top SA teams stunt players

The decision by our top clubs to shun the African Champions League is not doing any good to our local soccer as it denies our players a noble chance to shine on the continental stage.

The decision by our top clubs to shun the African Champions League is not doing any good to our local soccer as it denies our players a noble chance to shine on the continental stage.

Moreover, with the World Cup on the horizon, it is important to get international exposure and experience .

We often decry the fact that the media and sponsors are not giving the same prominence and coverage to the African Champions League like they do with its Uefa counterpart. The competition also does not receive enough television coverage of many of the matches.

Flimsy reasons have been given by Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs for not taking part in the continental league.

Pirates cited an ambition to win the local Castle Premiership as their reason for not taking part in this year's showpiece (by the look of things they are miles away from winning the league).

They were to play a first round second-leg match against US Transfoot when Chiefs absconded. They were subsequently suspended for three years. Players are being robbed of an opportunity to play in the continental showpiece and be spotted by talent scouts who take the competition seriously.
