A collier at a pit near Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal, died yesterday when a roof support apparently collapsed and struck him.

Norman Slater, head of Slater Coal, which operates the Magdalena Colliery, confirmed the incident, but declined to comment because an investigation into the accident was under way. A survey of the damage would also be done and an inquiry completed.

Sources said a stick support, which helps to hold up the roof of the mine, was believed to have collapsed and struck the miner.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said the miner had suffered severe head injuries that probably led to his death. - Sapa
