She has performed with some of the top musicians, but until now has never had a chance to record her own music.
But now Nurse Matlala has come up with a new brand of Shangaan music that she hopes breaks away from the tradition of purely disco-tinged Xitsonga music.
This week she released her debut album, Nurse Njekisoni, which listeners have fallen in love with.
It was released through new Xitsonga music record label Magwagwaile Productions, which is owned by Nyiko "Marhoya" Chauke and Jozi FM DJ Mukonwana.
Matlala is on an extensive promotional tour.
"Over the Easter weekend I will be performing in Limpopo, where the CD will be on sale. People must expect fireworks as I have prepared fully for this concert," Matlala said.
"This promotional tour closely follows the launch of the album in Soweto on March24.
"When I was invited to an interview on Jozi FM the response was great, and this simply means that people have been missing this kind of sound."
Matlala has performed with big names on the local pop scene, starting by being a backing vocalist for the late Shangaan disco king Peta Teanet in the early 1980s.
"Peta Teanet was a homeboy. He also came from Thapane, in Tzaneen, Limpopo.
"He saw me dancing and roped me in as one of his singers and dancers," she said.
She has also backed Oskido, and was part of the famous 1990s duo Shaka Bundu Girls, together with Candy Mokoena, who backed Penny Penny. They toured a lot of African countries.
"I have also backed Louis Mhlanga, touring Scotland with him.
"But this is the only time that I have had an opportunity to release my own album.
"In the past, I have just worked for other people. I am now really happy," she said.
