School teachers who also serve as local government councillors may soon have to choose between the two positions.
The issue was discussed yesterday during the second education ministers' council meeting of the year.
From reports provided by MECs, it was evident that school teaching and local government positions were incompatible, and that educators would have to make a choice. Where teachers had tried to occupy both positions, attention to school activities had invariably suffered.
"It was, therefore, agreed that a process of consultation would be pursued to determine the best solution to this matter," the education ministry said.
The council also approved the release of the draft Education Laws Amendment Bill for public comment. - Sapa
