A 22-year-old man from Signal Hill near Mafikeng, who allegedly killed his mother, is under police guard at Mafikeng Hospital.

It is alleged that the North West man, who cannot be named until he has appeared in court, arrived home at about 11pm on Thursday and wanted to lock the door.

His mother told him that she was going out and that she would lock the house when she returned.

When the son insisted that the door be locked immediately, an argument broke out.

Captain Sabata Mokgwaabone claimed the mother slapped her son and he retaliated by allegedly stabbing her with a screwdriver.

Mokgwaabone alleged the man overpowered his mother and continued the attack with a brick.

The woman was taken to the local hospital, but she was certified dead on arrival.

The man drank paint thinners in an apparent suicide attempt and was also admitted to the Mafikeng Hospital.

Mokgwaabone said the man will be charged with murder when he recovers.
