Alleged gangster Khaleed Abrahams' common-law wife smiled when the detective investigating the murders told the court he had no objection to Abrahams, 28, being released on bail. But the woman's smile turned to tears when magistrate Helma Smit ruled there were no compelling or exceptional circumstances justifying Abrahams' release on bail, not even the detective's opinion that bail was justified.
Smit said the prosecutor had seen fit to oppose bail.
During the proceedings Smit told Abrahams: "I hear each day in this court of the gang wars in the Delft area on the Cape Flats, over drug trafficking. It is clear the two murders in which you are allegedly involved were cold- blooded and gang-related."
Abrahams is alleged to have shot dead Jacobus Pietersen in a drive-by incident on January 27, and Ricardo Brown the next day.
He is also charged with attempted murder or firing a shot that wounded Roderick Siegelaar on March 1.
Abrahams was remanded in custody to September 28. - Sapa
