Insignia symbolises freedom

The National Assembly's new insignia is long overdue. The closure of the chapter on the apartheid symbol of parliament is welcomed and appreciated.

The National Assembly's new insignia is long overdue. The closure of the chapter on the apartheid symbol of parliament is welcomed and appreciated.

The new emblem is the first step in communicating the new positioning of parliament to the people. It embodies parliament's vision, mission and values. It is another victory for all citizens, especially the previously subjugated masses.

For me the new emblem is wonderful and the creativity and artistic value excellent. Everyone who contributed to it should be honoured.

I was so excited to see the drum when the emblem was unveiled because I feel this emblem belongs to the African people. This became a reality when it was said that the drum denotes the people's parliament and the triangle shows the nine provinces.

Now we can thunderously beat the drum which was inaugurated in parliament while we continue to dance and rejoice for freedom.

In underlining my joy about our new symbol, allow me to thank the ANC-led government for its quest to improve the quality of life of all citizens, to free the potential of each person and to build a united and democratic South Africa.

Freedom Park is another symbol of hope for all South Africans who are aware of human rights, freedom, reconciliation and nation building.
